Would you expect to get a gust of cigarette smoke in your face while sitting in the Student Center?

It does happen, and because of this a committee is now in place to find a suitable solution. The committee consists of Dean Lyn Brodersen, Dorothy Thompson, and Norlene Emerson.

It will be up to this committee to determine the best course of action for the future when regarding to smoking on campus.

"Those areas aren't working very effectively right now," said Student Senate President Stephanie McCarthy. "Especially outside of the Student Center."

The Student Center is the area that would appear to need the most change, as students are always going in and out and must pass by a smoking area at one of the exits. However, the other smoking locations around campus do not have the same negative reaction from students.

"It's kind of convenient to have a smoking place at every building," said Sophomore Caleb Hendrickson. "However, if it's cold or if it's raining you're going to get all wet."

The general consensus is that smokers do have the right to smoke, but the question is to what extent and where? At the moment most people seem to have the same thoughts about having a single smoking location, which at the moment is planned to be outside of the classroom building.

One option is placing smokers in a more appropriate place on campus has fallen through for this year. Campus administrators wanted to have the Richland Center High School shop class build a shelter for smokers.

However, on Monday, McCarthy said in the Student Senate meeting that high school administrators don't want students making a shelter that would allow for smoking, since they are trying to teach students not to smoke.

Discussion and plans continue to be discussed regarding the addition of a smoking shelter here on campus.

A smoking shelter is a possible solution along with the location being moved to one designated area around campus. It would consist of no more than three walls, to help protect any smokers from the harsh elements which could arise.

"They should have the privilege to smoke," said Sophomore Jessica Zadrazil. "But not in someone else's environment."

"The smoking policy issue is on the agenda each month for the steering committee meetings," said Emerson on the possibility of change. "It's a complicated issue and we want to make sure we make the best decision we can for all involved."

The cost of the shelter will be between $1500 to $2000.

No plan is in place at this time and as Emerson said, they are taking their time to make the best decision.

What do you think of the possible changes to the smoking locations? How will this affect you?

I think that smoking should be no longer on campus. Some people have a hard enough time just walking pass the smoke cuase it makes them sick. So if i had a choice in this vote to get a smoking shelter would be no cuase smokeing should be off campus!

I think that people should have the choice to smoke while on campus. If people are having an issue with walking by the smoke, and it is that big of an issue to them, there are plenty of exits to the student center, so they, for no reason, HAVE to walk right next to "smokers corner. (Continued…)
