PUC loses four professors

The recent death of a retired PUC professor and administrator marks only the most recent loss PUC has felt.

On Aug. 14, Dick Sander, a retired PUC professor and administrator, died due to an illness at the age of 84. Sander was a Munster resident and worked at PUC from 1962-1989.

Spectacular images of the Whirlpool Galaxy, Cocoon Nebula, Jupiter and its moons, among other marvels of the universe were projected onto viewing screens in Alumni Hall for all to see on the evening of Aug. 27.

These images had actually been taken using the Northwest Indiana Robotic Telescope, the newest addition to the physics and astronomy programs at PUC.

While many college students vacation during their summer break, relaxing poolside or lying out on the beach, PUC student Ben Moul spent his summer bicycling 3,529 miles across the United States.

"I wanted the chance to challenge myself. I just wanted to see if I could do it," Moul, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering major, said.

'Rocky Dollars' to replace Flex points

Western Illinois University is now offering a new flexible spending system very much like Flex points called Rocky Dollars.

After the rumor of the new system spread, many students were confused about the difference between Rocky Dollars and Flex Plan. Simply put, Rocky Dollars is a pre-paid plan that can be paid by debit/credit card or cash, whereas the Flex points system is a charge to your account.

Charges Dropped Against Benedictine Students

Charges were dropped in the cases of the four students arrested last spring while on a Benedictine University sponsored trip to Florida, according to Polk County, Fla., State Prosecutor's Office.

John DeMartino, James Callahan, Kevin Crowley and Shay Wagner's first trial was postponed in April, and all four students were placed in pretrial intervention, according to the prosecutor's office.

This fall, Benedictine University is meeting its students with several changes, additions and works-in-progress.

In the spring of 2010, BU took on the task of building a parking garage in the Kindlon parking lot. According to Project Director Chad Treisch, the project officially broke ground July 19, 2010.
